Threats
The biggest threat to these habitats is the strong expansion of vegetal invasive plants all over the area. The exotic species with invasive characteristics are one of the main threats to biodiversity at global level. Every year there are some plants and animal threatened of extinction as a result of invasive species expansion.

In islands this problem is worse due to limited territory. In the Azores this problem has big proportions, with many species and habitats in risk of disappearing for the rapid growth of the area covered by these plants. The actions of this project are destined to combat directly this threat and to find ways to support this action in long term, something that is difficult due to high cost of this actions.

Main invasive species present in the intervention area of LIFE Sustainable Laurel Forest project are:

1 - Conteira – Hedychium gardnerarum
2 - Cletra – Clethra arborea
3 - Gigante – Gunnera tinctoria
4 - Incenso – Pittosporum undulatum
